Axon Hiram Ascow [Male] b. 26 OCT 1848 Heaton Norris, Cheshire, England - d. 1 DEC 1925
Census: 1881
Residence: 1881

1881 UK Census RG11/3481 74/4

I have drawings from 1869-78 done by Hiram probably as a young lad
( conjecture) plus I have some photos of him at age 26 dated from the
clothes 1870-1880. I recall that his family were hoteliers and he and his
wife opened a new hotel in the Isle of Man about the time of the Boer War
and thus didn't do well and lost the business. I think therefore in 1881 the
family may have been in Douglas. Gertude was born in 1883. Both her and her
husband are deceased as are her 2 daughters. Ernest who married a Lillian -
lived in Douglas in a huge house called " Axona" we visited as children in
the 1950's. Ernest was deceased by then. Ernest and Lillian Axon were in the
Hire Purchase business and did very well. They had no children. I have no
recollection of any talk of Frederick I'm wondering if perhaps he was a WW1
tragedy.
I think its quite possible that Hiram may not have been
his first name.Although everything I have has a H Axon signature or the
intials H.A. One sketch I have dated 1878 is of " Moulton " marketplace its
a bit faded and hard to make out- the ... lton is there and the M I wonder
if this a place near Heaton Norris.
I also think its probable that people back then often misled us about their
ages and the birth of children in relation to their marriage but I'm afraid
that Hiram has drawings from 1869 which even if this were so he could not
have been born about 1870 unless he was a child genius! I have one
inscription on a drawing dated1869 of a reproduction of a Reubens picture
that he gave to his daughter Gertrude on the occasion of her 32nd birthday
in 1915 full of informative detail like he made the drawing 46 years ago'
plus a photo of his mother with the notation My Dear Mother Mrs Axon - no
dates or names - didn't they realize we would be needing this information?
I'm thinking of trying to pusue this family from the mother whom again I
have the name Mary Betsy Duxbury from the back of a photo written by my
grandmother . The photo is one of those glass covered with a decorative
metal trim around, in the photo are Mary Betsy and her sister Sue they both
look very young about 16 -17 and from the style of clothes again I would put
in 1870,.
