Travelled to Canada in 1847
at March 2001, it is unclear who was father to Robert Joseph and his brother John. It is unlikely that they were the children of John Duxbury and a first wife. His marriage to Rachel Opemshaw describes John as unmarried. The father may be John's father Nathan, b 1777.??
We don't know the parents.
Noreen, on Manitoulin Island, has always maintained that the original Nathan b. l777 was Robert Joseph's father. However, that was based on family lore, I can't find any documentation on that yet, and Nathan would have been 50 yrs old when RJ was born

I made a connection here a few weeks ago. I wrote to a web site called Meaford.com and decided to ask about John b.1801 and the fact that he had been a lay preacher. So asked the webmaster, who seemed to know the history of the town, about it and he wrote back saying that he had lived on the Duxbury Sideroad for the last 25 years and his mother and father were selling their house in town and moving to the old homestead owned by Nathan and John Duxbury!. He has pictures showing the old hand hewn logs he will send me. Also, the church that John preached in still exists and he is going to see if he can get some info from the members. How often would you write someone and have them write back and say they live in your ancestor's home? When I get back from England I'll drive up and see him, visit the old place, and take some pictures. I've also found old John's will, with all the members of his family mentioned, a copy is in the binder.
I don't know if I mentioned to you that I have contact with a lady close by who knows of my Robert Joseph. (Thank goodness there's someone out there who does)
She knew when he died, that he had a woolen mill, names of his wives, children.
She thinks that he is a son of John b. 1801, and brother of her relative also named John. She says that they are from old John's lst marriage.(He didn't marry Rachel Openshaw until 1848 when he would be 47 years old - so maybe) Also they are the people in the l851 Census in Meaford. Nathan, John & Rachel Openshaw and their new son Isaac and Robt. J. at 22 years of age. I couldn't figure out why Robt. J. would be there, but maybe Nathan was his grandfather and John, his father.
Last week I went to the Archives downtown and found the death certificate for young John Duxbury and it says he was born in Yorkshire. I don't know who gave this information in the document. Maybe that's why I'm not finding info (christenings etc. ) because I'm concentrating on Lancashire. Also, someone mentioned that woolen mfg. was more prominent in Yorkshire than in Lancashire? These two men (young John and my Robt J. did end up together on Manitoulin Is with their families to farm) They are on an l891 census there. In my grandfather's notes he says that "my dad (Robt.J) had to call on his brother John often for advice on farming". I ASSUMED that he meant old John (b.l801) so maybe there is something to this whole idea.
Although, I was hoping that when I found old John's will, that he would mention Robert J. in it - but it's only the children from the Rachel O. marriage.
