Duxbury Rd. was developed by my great-grandfather, George, around
1900 and all the houses still have very patriotic Boer War names. George was
quite an entrepreneur. We believe he developed several other streets in the
area. He also built the Leicester Opera House for the theatrical produc
Stoll (whose first name eludes me!). We have also found out recently that he
owned at least one pub as his name showed up in a recently published
directory of Leics. breweries.
Coincidentally a drawing of his house appeared in the Leicester Mercury last
week with speculation that "it must at one time have been an elegant home".
I'm writing to give them the details. Incidentally it's now a night club!
I've also established contact recently with a surprise cousin in Canada.
George's sister Clara (who is on the family tree) was married as shown to a
Thomas Beck from Newtown Linford outside Leicester. Apparently two of h
sons emigrated to Canada and the family are in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This
was all news to me but we got together through the Leicestershire-Plus
mailing list. Delightfully they had an old photo of Clara which they've
e-mailed to me.

Our American connection relates to a
family saga. From c.1850 onwards Thomas D. and Frances brought up their
nephew William Ansell who was the son of Frances' sister. He and their
daughter Elizabeth wanted to marry but Thomas would not allow it as they were
cousins. William emigrated to Australia and Elizabeth died a spinster.
William married and in the First World War his son William was an Australian
soldier who came to Leicester to look up his relatives. As I guess seco
cousins was thought safe enough he married George's daughter Elizabeth Ethel
and they returned to Australia. They had two daughters and a son who died in
infancy. The older daughter Elizabeth (Betty) married an American Sam Mandel.
I believe he worked in the oil industry and that they lived in Venezuela for
a time. Last heard of (1970's) they lived in Fort Worth. Betty had some
correspondence with my father and was doing some family tree work but I think
mostly on the Ansell side.
The other daughter Margaret (Peggy) stayed in Australia and I believe is
still alive in Sydney. I visited with her and her family briefly in 1970. My
father's cousin David is I believe in contact with them so I should be able
to extend the tree further down. For interest Peggy's daughter Lucy was given
the middle name Duxbury as she was born shortly after my great-uncle Frank
visited the family.
I've just remembered another U.S. connection. The David referred to above has
a brother John who has travelled extensively but now I believe is living in
Africa. His ex-wife Dawn used to live in Florida but is now, I think, in
California. They had two daughters Linsey, who was killed in a car crash in
Florida, and Lisa: but I don't know if she is still in the U.S.A.
My wife is from Denver and we lived there from 1972-80. Our daughter was born
in Denver so has joint-nationality. We were last there in April to see a new
niece on her side. She also has family in Indiana and Virginia. I have been
devoting spare time to tracing back both sides of her family who came to Iowa
from Germany and Norway but now I will be inspired to fill in some holes on
the Duxbury tree!

The Henry Duxbury in Oakham and Rutland is my possible 4greats-grandfather. Just to refresh, my 3greats was Richard of Wigston near Leicester. I have established that Henry did have a son called Richard who, although not mentioned by name in the will, signed for bequests: the papers are in the Northants Record Office.
It's strange that he was not mentioned by name in the will as he would have been the oldest son and two other sons were mentioned. Richard, however, would have been from Henry's first marriage which might be an explanation. I'm at a brick wall on this one except for one idea which is that Henry's brother-in-law Thomas Hallowell did leave some property in Olney to at least 2 of the sons of Henry and I thought if I could see the will Richard just might be mentioned.
Thomas H. seemed to flit between Yorkshire and Bucks. His will is not registered in Yorks. so I assume was proved in Bucks
