My Duxbury originates with Sarah Duxbury, daughter of
Thomas and Jane. According to the 1840 census they were all born in
England, however, we found them in Edinburgh, Scotland where Thomas was
a "general agent". Sarah must have been born in 1812 or 1813, and we
find no record of siblings.
In 1835 Sarah married William Hewat in Edinburgh. Their first two
children, John and Thomas, were born there, and they then emigrated to
Dublin, Ireland. There Sarah gave birth to Andrew, Elizabeth, and
William. All the children were given Duxbury as a middle name, and that
tradition has continued down through the generations. My uncle is
Harold Duxbury Bower.
William and Sarah's children flew the coop. John went to Australia when
he was about 18 and had a gillion kids. Thomas had 2 children, but he
and his wife both died when the children were very young. Andrew took
off for South Africa (he is my great grandfather). Elizabeth died in
childhood. William stayed in Dublin and became quite wealthy in the
banking business. He and his wife never had children but did basically
raise Thomas' son. (The daughter was sent to Scotland to live with
unmarried aunts and uncles.)
As you can see my knowledge of the Duxbury family is very scarce since
it basically begins and ends with Sarah and her parents. I have always
hoped to be able to link them to the Lancastershire Duxburys as I knew
that was where the name originated.
