Married Nancy Garside shortly before he left England. Nancy's father was John Marler, a half brother of the man who operated Marler's Mill near Ashton's Mill in Newton-More. Nancy's father and mother lived together as husband and wife but were never legally married, which accounts for the fact that Nancy took the name "Garside" after her mother, whereas her father's name was Marler. John Marler came to Wisconsin and stayed there for a short time, going back to England therafter.
