Grandad was the original barrow boy for Mark before he teamed up with Spencer to form Marks & Spencers, He was given a parcel of shares in the company. We don't know what happened to these shares. Information gained from M & S, 100th Anniversary Book, which I obtained when we were in England in 1995.
In the 1881 Census John was living with his parents, Alfred & Alice Littlewood & sisters Ann & Sarah at 426c Ashton Old Road, Openshaw, Lancashire. He was 1 at this time.
I have obtained Esther & John's marriage cert. (3/8/1903) from the Zion Chapel, Ashton New Rd, Beswick, Prestwich, in the counties of Lancaster & Manchester. John (Warehouse-man) was the son of Alfred Littlewood (Wire Drawer). The witnesses to the marriage were William Thos. Hallmark & Maria Hallmark, The church was Methodist. When John was married his occupation was a Warehouseman & his age was 23.
In the 1891 Census of Manchester, Civil Parish, Bradford cum Beswick, John (11) is living with his father Alfred Littlewood - 41 (W) at 27 Grey Mare Lane, Bradford. Alice had died as a result of childbirth on 8/9/1888. With them are Annie (15); Alice (8); & Fred (6).
In the 1901 Census, John is 21, Born, Droylsden; Adminst. County: Manchester; Civil Parish: North Manchester; Occupation: Hardware Warehouseman.
John died 21 November, 1944 aged 65 years of Chronic Myorcardial Degeneration & Bronchial Asthma. He was a "Aero Engineer" at the time of his death & is buried in Plot H910 in Mangotsfield Cemetary (between Mangotsfield & Downend). Before he died they were living at 91 Thicket Ave, Fishponds, Bristol, England.

Nanna was to have come to Australia (with Auntie Marie) but died of a heart attack before she was due to come & live with us
Esther died 22nd Jan, 1952 (aged 73) ( Cerebral Thrombosis/ Essential Hypertension). She died during her sleep & is buried in Plot H910 in Mangotsfield Cemetary (in between Mangotsfield & Downend). When she died she was living at Thicket Rd, Fishponds, Bristol. Her death was informed by J H Littlewood,( Uncle Jack) son, of 207 Cleve Lodge Rd, Downend Bristol.

Alfred was a Wire Drawer. His wife died in childbirth & the child was adopted out & went to America.
In the 1881 Census Alfred Littlewood (31) (Brighouse Yks) & his wife Alice Duxberry (30) (West Derby, Lan) were living with their children at 426c Ashton Old Road in Openshaw. Alfred was 31 & Alice was 30. Ann was 5; Sarah was 3 & John was 1. The children were all born in Droylesden, Lancs. Also, a domestic servant, Martha Fogg, aged 18 from Birkenhead in Cheshire, was living with them.
Alice (37) died (8th September, 1888) at 27 Grey Mare Lane, Bradford, Lancs as the result of childbirth (Parturition Syncope).
(Alice had another son Thomas in 1887/8 he was christened 15/2/1888 in Christ Church, Bradford.
It might be that she had a miscarriage from another child after Thomas or she died from complications from Thomas's birth early in 1888 or late 1887.)
In the 1891 Census Alfred (41) was widowed & still living at 27 Grey Mare Lane, Bradford with Annie (15); John (11); Alice (8) b. Openshaw c.1883; & Fred (6) b. Bradford c.1885. Also Thomas is not with them. Sarah (13) is staying with her grandparents, John & Sarah Littlewood at 15 North Rd, Droylsden, Lancs.
Alfred died on 9th June 1929 at the home of his daughter, Sarah Hague, 15 Macclesfield Rd, Taxal, Cheshire, of Carcinoma of Head of Pancreas. He was 79. The death was Registered by J. E. Hague, (John Edward) Son-in-law, 15 Macclesfield Rd, Taxal on 10th June, 1929.

Found a "Sarah" Littlewood in the Mar Quarter of 1879, Ashton Vol 8D pge 495.
In the 1891 Census of Droylsden, Lancashire, Sarah (13) is staying with her grandparents, John (69) & Sarah Littlewood (68) at 15 North Rd, Droylsden.
In the 1901 Census Sarah is 23, born: Droylsden; Administative County: Derbyshire; Civil Parish: Fernilee; Occupation: Cotton Winder.
Sarah Littlewood married John Edward Hague on 31/3/1902 in Taxal, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England.
Alfred Littlewood (Sarah's father) died at the home of Sarah & John Hague, 9/6/1929, in Taxal, Cheshire.
