She obtained a Diploma of Associate from the Victoria College of Music, London for Pianofort e playing. The examination was held on June 21st 1927 in Liverpool. On June 19th 1928 she obt ained the Diploma of Licentiate.

William John was born in Kendal, his father died when he was 2 years old of TB and his mothe r remarried to a Thomas Unsworth. At the time of 185 census William was living as a step so n with Thomas and Jane at yard 80, no 10, Stricklandgate, he was working as an errand boy. Wi lliam worked as a farrier around 1882 when he married Catherine Byrnes, they lived at Benson s Green, Stricklandgate. He served in the Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry Cavalry aroun d the late 1870's and early 1880's. He then ran a pub called the 'Elephant Inn', Stricklandga te, Kendal from about Oct 1885 to Autumn 1889 for an annual rent of Đ70 (The inn has now bee n demolished to make way for the 'Elephant yard shopping center'). There is correspondance wi th an uncle 'John Cockroft' from 'Snohomish, Washington state, USA' dated 22 Dec 1889 talkin g of difficulty of running a pub and the evils of drink, telling him to selling business. O n 3rd August 1889 there was an appeal against an income tax assessment and on 17th October th e magistrates refused to renew his license for the Elephant Inn and it was then sold. He the n moved to Liverpool and in Feb 1890 a licence was applied for in Liverpool but on 3rd of Jun e there was a county court summons issued against him. The total solicitors charges to sort o ut all the affairs came to 7 pounds 12 shillings and sixpence. Once the business had been so ld he became a seaman (Steward) on the SS 'Ohio' sailing from Liverpool to Philadelphia sever al times around 1891. He then dissappears until 1900 when his wife Catherine died of a hear t attack at Southill Road, Kirkdale, Liverpool. At the time of the 1901 census he was a widow er living at 12 Alfonso Road, Kirkdale, Liverpool and working as a Dock Porter, a few weeks l ater he then married his second wife Annie Lamb. Some time after that he then started a frui t and veg bussiness.

After the dispute over the business in kendal and the 9 year dissapearance he starts callin g himself William John as opposed to William and in 1917 he was left Đ300 in a will by an unc le 'Henry Cockroft'.

The John Cockroft mentioned in the letter above was killed on Thursday 21st July in a fall fr om scaffolding on a building at Snohomish. He was a carpenter, about 60 years old and the so n of a William Cockroft from Kirkland, Kendal.

At the time of the marriage John was living at Burk Street, Carlisle and Jane lived in Kirkla nd, Kendal. The marriage took place at the Catholic chapel in Kendal and the witnesses wher e Richard Burkett and Ann Rigg. After the marriage they lived in Fellside, Kendal. He died i n 1859 of TB at Kirkland, Kendal.

Jane had three sisters and four brothers John, Henry, William and Abel. John went off to Amer ica and died in an accident in Snohomish, Washington state. When John Ducksbury died of TB i n 1859, Jane went on to marry Thomas Unsworth (she was his third wife, and he is believed t o have had a total of 22 children) who was a blacksmith and then a farmer at Strickland Ketel , near Kendal. Jane died Dec 1886.

At the time of the 1881 census, she was a cook working for William Stavert, a farmer of 400 a cres at Heslington Laithes, Heslington, Westmorland. She remained here until her marriage i n 1882.
