He was born at the Kings Arms Horel in Lancaster, was educated at the North Eastern County Sc hool at Barnards Castle.
Around 1914 he was a hotel manager of the George Hotel in Huddersfield. He enlisted with the army (3rd Reserve Northumbrian Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corp) as a private in Hull on 26 Nov 1914. On 25th Jan 1915 he was promoted to Lance Corpral, 12th Feb 1915 to Corpo al and 3rd April to Sergent. On 19th May 1915 he obtained a comission as a Lieutenent in the 4th (reserve) Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment and in July 1916 promoted to Captain . He had a heart complaint which resulted in him being medically retiered around August 1919.

Lived at 8 Dallas Road, Lancaster and worked as a solicitors clerk. He enlisted as a private in the 5th Battalian Kings own Lancashire Regiment on 9th Oct 1914. On 14th Feb 1915 he went to fight in France and was wounded (severe gun shot wound to the left foot) returning home on the 8th May 1915. He spent a month in Wandsworth hospital in London and in the september was given a commision as a 2nd Lieutenant and returned to France. On 8 August 1916 he was wounded at Guillemont and taken prisoner (bullet through right shoulder and broken right arm) , on his return to England after the war he was promoted to Lieutenant and left the army around Jan 1921 and gave his place of residence as Felixstowe

William was a girth weaver and was living in Highgate at the time of the marriage. They wer e married at the church of St Thomas and the witnesses being Sarah Ann Robinson and John Duck sbury both of whome later married.

"John DUCKSBURY, Full Age, Bachelor, Wool Comber, Son of William DUCKSBURY, Weaver & Elizabet h ROGERSON, Full age, Spinster, Servant, Dau of Thomas ROGERSON, Weaver. Married after Banns . Grooom signed, bride marked.
Witnesses - John Carter (Signed) and Alica DUCKSBURY (Marked)."

In the 1840's they where living around Leathwaitrigg/Scalthwaitrigg but by the time of the 18 51 census they where living at Knipes Yard in Kirkland, Kendal. Their name appears spelt as D ucksberry on some certificates, John died from Tubercolocis. The informant of the death bein g a J.Littlewood who was present at the death and resided at Watts Field, Nethergraveship.
