In 1860, he was reported to be a grocer and later described as a bookkeeper at Blackburn, England. He migrated to New Zealand by ship "Chili" which berthed at Port Chalmers (Dunedin) on 19 Nov 1862 after an 83 day voyage .He reportedly came to New Zealand to prospect for gold which he did at Westland gold field. Later, he was engaged in road building and farming near Akaroa, Canterbury, New Zealand.
