Not established with certainty that the correct James is given.

(Leeds District Archives). The family's abode was Richmond Hill in Leeds. Sarah Ann's father John Ashworth's occupation was shown as Officer of Excise. We looked at Kew Public Record Office to find Entry Papers of excise men and succeeded in locating John Ashworth's entry papers. They showed that John Ashworth born in Bury, Lancaster in Manchester Collection was qualified for surveying common brewers, victuallers, maltsters, chandlers, soapmakers, papermakers, tanners, towers, brandy, wine, tea, tobacco dealers, brickmakers. He was sworn in 17 May 1828. He was described as age 28, healthy, active, married with a wife and two children, not encumbered with debts, bred a hatter. He was endorsed by Joseph Ashworth, Bury, confectioner and John Ashworth, Bury, hatter. There may be further records on John's excise career, but we ran out of time when we were at Kew. If he died while an officer of excise, that may be in the records. Perhaps his wife received a pension and that could be on record.
